They later closed the show with I Saw Her Standing There and I Want to Hold Your Hand. The British Invasion had begun.
A then-record 73 million people tuned in (over 45 percent of American households, nearly identical to the rating this year’s record-setting Super Bowl achieved),making it one of the seminal moments in television history.
